What are the Benefits of Building a Sun Room?

There are several benefits for owning a sun room.  One of the most important is its energy efficiency.  Everyone knows how important it is to save energy these days; and everyone knows that they're tired of spending all of that money!  Your sun or patio room is an excellent investment and you'll find that it's COMPLETELY worth it.  Another benefit is adding a beautiful new room to your house.  You get the best of both worlds:  the outside without the rain or humidity and without bugs and dirt; you get the inside with the sunlight, stars, and beautiful landscape of trees and flowers.  Most importantly, it can become any type of room you want!  A room for your exercise equipment, a TV room, or just a regular porch.  Bring your creativity to life!

What Designs are Available for these Rooms?

The main types of structures are Curved, Studio, Cathedral, Victorian, and Georgian.  The most popular design is the Glass Roof Curved Design.  Rooms with glass roofs are often referred to as "Sun and Stars Rooms."  With this design, the glass windows curve up, blending with the glass roof; as opposed to the walls and roof joining at a corner.  This design gives a very modern look and has exceptional energy-efficiency.  The Solid Roof Design is more of a "Sun and Shade Room."  This design is having windows all the way around and a solid roof.  This provides shade, which more proficiently keeps the room cooler than standard "Sun and Stars Rooms," by minimizing direct sunlight, but still allowing sunlight to come in through the sides.  The Studio and Cathedral Designs have a more residential architecture which makes the room seem more like a part of your home as opposed to an addition.  The Victorian and Georgian Designs have an elegant, classical look.   They are the most spacious, as they have a glass roof which comes to a point in the center.  This makes the roof much higher than other designs and the floor space larger, creating a classical and airy setting.  The possibilities are endless.  You can get one built under an existing roof, or an elevated patio room on a deck.  Many designers can even bring your own ideas to life, customizing a suiting and unique design for your individual taste.

What Materials are Used to Construct a Sun Room?

Besides the glass itself, the beams, interior design, and the structure of the room are the elements that hold it all together.  A few materials that the interior can be constructed with are aluminum, vinyl-clad aluminum, or wood.  The vinyl structure is the best of the three.  It has the strongest exo-skeleton and the best insulation.  It's also easy to clean, practically maintenance-free, and it's tight around the edges keeping out insects and other pests.  A structure made of wood is a good choice for a more natural atmosphere.  Wood choices include oak, pine and northern white pine.  Wood is very diverse; it doesn't only have to be for straight beams.  They can curve the beams, letting you use wood on any style house there is.

How do I decide which type of Glass is Best for Me?

There are many different types of glass that can be used.  One type is tempered safety glass which is four times stronger than standard home windows.  The strength is important to reduce the chances of cracking or break-ins.  Another type is also long-lasting fiber glass which won't rust, dent, or corrode.  It is important to find the type of glass that suits your specific needs.  An important thing to consider when choosing your glass is the "R-value."  R-value is a measurement of thermal resistance:  how easily heat can travel through.  The higher the number the better.  It prevents the room from getting too hot in the summer and from becoming too cold in the winter.  Other than the R-value, there are several other things to consider.  The amount of condensation, glare, and UV rays.  Condensation occurs when the outside temperature greatly differs from the inside temperature.  With the better types of glass, condensation won't occur unless it's below 0°  Fahrenheit outside.  When choosing your glass, make sure it has a low degree  (ex.  condensation  -8)  The lower the degree the better.  Glare may not seem like an important thing to consider, but sometimes, if the reflectivity isn't low the glass can act as a mirror, or have a reflection of the sun in your eyes.  It can be very inconvenient if you want to have a clear vision of the outdoors.  UV rays are extremely important to consider.  UV rays cause 50% of fabric fading, and are very bad for the skin.  When choosing glass, you want to find the lowest percentage of ultra violent transmittance.

These days, cooling and heating costs alone are enough to make you not want to use them at all.  Just by building a sunroom, you're going to make that money back due to the lack of energy you will use thereafter.  Saving that energy not only benefits your finances, it helps keep our earth's resources from being wasted.  Decisions for benefiting our earth sure be made today for a more beautiful and brighter tomorrow.
