The sewer lateral, the underground pipe, connections from the property to the sewer line.
The sewer lateral is the out-going drain pipe normally 4 inches in diameter.
The entire connecting pipe is the responsibility of the property owner.

Advantages of Cast Iron Pipe and Fittings. Soundproofing Qualities of Cast Iron Pipe and Fittings
Requirements for a Safe and Durable DWV System. The use of neoprene gaskets and hubless coupling with cast iron pipe and
fittings significantly reduces noise and vibration. Because of the composition and structure of cast iron, sound is muffled rather than
transmitted or amplified. The neoprene separating the pipe from the fitting suppresses contact-related sound. Economic Advantages of Cast

| The properties of cast iron soil pipe and fittings and the various joining
methods demonstrate that cast iron affords a number of economic advantages. These advantages include performance, versatility, low cost installation,
and product availability. The performance and durability of cast iron pipe and fittings are superior to any other product used for sanitary and storm
drain, waste, and vent piping. When it comes to performance, cast iron has no equal.
Cast iron pipe and fittings are the most versatile sanitary and storm drain, waste, and vent piping material on the market. They are
available with a variety of joining methods, allowing for efficient installation, both above and below the floor and underground.
They are also adaptable for use in all types of building construction.
A compression gasket joint and hubless coupling joint can be made quickly and efficiently. |

| Types of Cast Iron Soil Pipe and Fittings
Cast iron soil pipe used in the U.S. is classified as either Hub and Spigot or No Hub, or Hubless. Hub and Spigot pipe and fittings have
hubs into which the spigot (plain end) of the pipe or fitting is inserted. The joint is sealed with a rubber compression gasket or molten lead and oakum.
Hub and spigot pipe and fittings are available in two classes of thickness: Service (SV) and Extra Heavy (XH). The method of joining hubless pipe and fittings utilizes a shielded hubless
coupling which consists of a neoprene rubber sleeve and a stainless steal shield that slips over the end of the pipe and fittings and is tightened
with a torque wrench. Cast Iron Pipe and Fittings' Resistance to Abrasion Cast iron pipe and fittings are highly resistant to abrasion from sand,
gravel, garbage disposal residue, dishwasher discharge, and debris carried in suspension along the lower portion of the sewer or drain. Uses Cast iron
soil pipe and fittings are used primarily in building construction for sanitary and storm drain, waste and vent piping applications. In buildings,
cast iron pipe and fittings are installed within the partitions and serves the tub, lavatory, and water closet fixtures. The main line in this assembly
is the cast iron soil stack, which runs vertically from the building drain up through the structure and through the roof. Waste lines are connected to
this main soil stack, and vent lines may also be tied in at a point above the highest fixture. In some installations, vent lines are connected to a
separate vent stack, which acts as the main source of air to and from the roof. Cast iron soil pipe and fittings are also used for storm drainage from
roofs, yards, and courtyards in building construction. At present, cast iron soil pipe and fittings are the preferred material in high-rise structures
for drain, waste and vent and sewer – without concern for building height. |

Requirements for a Safe and
Durable Drain, Waste and Vent System A safe and durable drain, waste and
vent piping system requires that the material possess the following
important characteristics: Strength and rigidity Durability exceeding
expected life of building Quiet operation, resistant to noise transmission
Noncombustible and does not contribute to the spreading of flames High crush
strength and ability to withstand traffic and trench loads Ability to
withstand temperature extremes High corrosion resistance Low coefficient of
expansion and contraction High abrasion resistance Leak-free joints that
resist infiltration and exfiltration Performance For
hundred of years, cast iron has been the premier piping material throughout
the world for drain, waste and vent applications. |

Unique corrosion resistance characteristics make cast iron pipe and fittings ideally suited for plumbing applications. When exposed to
corrosive conditions, cast iron leaves behind an insoluble layer of corrosion that provides a barrier to additional corrosion.
Unfortunately, the privately owned underground section of a lateral is often taken for
granted until a problem erupts that can't be ignored -- such as raw sewage backing up into a dwelling.
The primary purpose for the approval of this program is to reduce the amount of groundwater entering the sanitary
sewer system. The infiltration of groundwater into the sanitary sewer system increases the costs of pumping and treating wastewater,
reduces system capacity, and can lead to sewer overflows.
A ‘sewer lateral’ is the segment of sewer drain line that extends from just outside your house foundation to the connection with the
City’s public sewer mainline. Leaking or broken sewer laterals that allow groundwater, roots, and dirt into the system are typical
problems for cities with older sewer systems. It's important to keep your lateral in proper working order, and functioning as it was
intended. If the lateral qualifies for replacement, any rain drain downspouts that are currently draining to the sewer lateral will
be disconnected, as this also contributes to the wastewater treatment process. Call us about: sewage problems, backed up sewer pipe, contractors, clogged lateral
