Harsh and rough.

accent
A distinctive feature or quality, such as a feature that accentuates, contrasts with, or complements a decorative style.

accommodate
To allow for; consider.

accumulation
The process of growing into a large amount or heap.

adapter
A converter of electric current to a desired form.

additive
A substance added in small amounts to something else to improve, strengthen, or otherwise alter it.

adequate
Sufficient to satisfy a requirement or meet a need.

adhere
To stick fast by or as if by suction or glue.

adjacent
Close to; lying near.

aerate
To supply with air or expose to the circulation of air.

aggregate
The mineral materials, such as sand or stone, used in making concrete.

air conditioning
The state of temperature and humidity produced by an air conditioner, a system that keeps air cool and dry.

algae
Any of various chiefly aquatic, eukaryotic, photosynthetic organisms, ranging in size from single-celled forms to the giant kelp.

algaecide
An agent used to kill algae.

alignment
Arrangement or position in a straight line or in parallel lines.

alkyd
A durable synthetic resin widely used in adhesives and paints.

bevel
To cut at an inclination that forms an angle other than a right angle.

blister
A raised bubble, as on a painted or laminated surface.

bolt
A fastener consisting of a threaded pin or rod with a head at one end, designed to be inserted through holes in assembled parts and secured by a mated nut that is tightened by applying torque.

bonnet
A removable metal plate over a machine part, such as a valve.

bow
To bend into a curve or bow.

braces
Devices that hold or fasten two or more parts together or in place.

brad
A thin wire nail with a small head or a slight side projection instead of a head.

brittle
Likely to break, snap, or crack, as when subjected to pressure.

bronze
Any of various alloys of copper and tin in various proportions, sometimes with traces of other metals.

buckling
To cause to bend, warp, or crumple.

bulge
A protruding part; an outward curve or swelling.

calcium
A white metallic element that burns with a brilliant light; the fifth most abundant element in the earth's crust; an important component of most plants and animals.

cam
An eccentric or multiply curved wheel mounted on a rotating shaft, used to produce variable or reciprocating motion in another engaged or contacted part.

capabilities
The capacity to be used, treated, or developed for a specific purpose.

cartridge
A module designed to be inserted into a larger piece of equipment.

casement
A window sash that opens outward by means of hinges.

caulk
To make watertight or airtight by filling or sealing.

caution
Careful forethought to avoid danger or harm.

cavities
A hollow; a hole.

chamber
An enclosed space or compartment.

channel
A rolled metal bar with a bracket-shaped section.

chisel
To shape or cut with a chisel.

chlorine
A common nonmetallic element belonging to the halogens; best known as a heavy yellow irritating toxic gas; used to purify water and as a bleaching agent and disinfectant.

circuit
A closed path followed or capable of being followed by an electric current.

circulating
To move about or flow freely, as air.

clarifier
Something used to make clear by removing impurities or solid matter.

clevis
A U-shaped metal piece with holes in each end through which a pin or bolt is run, used as a fastening device.

clutch
Any of various devices for engaging and disengaging two working parts of a shaft or of a shaft and a driving mechanism; the apparatus, such as a lever or pedal, that activates one of these devices.

cock
A faucet or valve by which the flow of a liquid or gas can be regulated.

compost
A mixture of decaying organic matter, as from leaves and manure, used to improve soil structure and provide nutrients.

compound
A combination of two or more elements or parts.

compressor
A pump or other machine that increases the pressure of a gas.

condensation
The process by which a gas or vapor changes to a liquid; the liquid so formed.

condenser

continuity
An uninterrupted succession or flow; a coherent whole.

The outline of a figure, body, or mass.

cone
A solid body having a circle for its base and sides inclined so as to meet at a point above the base.

copper
A ductile malleable metallic element that is an excellent conductor of heat and electricity and is used for electrical wiring, water piping, and corrosion-resistant parts, either pure or in alloys such as brass and bronze.

cornice
A horizontal molded projection that crowns or completes a building or wall.

corrosion
A state of deterioration in metals caused by oxidation or chemical action.

coupling
A connection (like a clamp or vise) between two things so they move together.

cricket
A small wooden footstool.

crosshatch
A pattern made by two or more sets of intersecting parallel lines.

cylindrical
Of, relating to, or having the shape of a cylinder, especially of a circular cylinder.

debris
Carelessly discarded refuse; litter.

décor
A decorative style or scheme, as of a room.

defective
Having a defect; faulty.

deflect
Prevent the occurrence of; prevent from happening.

denatured
Changed in nature or natural quality.

deterioration
The process or condition of becoming worse.

diameter
A straight line connecting two opposite points on the surface of a spherical or cylindrical body, or the distance measured along such a line.

diffuser
A light fixture, such as a frosted globe, that spreads light evenly.

dilute
To make thinner or less concentrated by adding a liquid such as water.

dimension
A measure of spatial extent, especially width, height, or length.

discoloration
A discolored spot, smudge, or area; a stain.

disposal
The act or process of getting rid of something.

dissipate
To cause to separate and go in different directions.

distorted
To twist out of a proper or natural relation of parts; misshape.

diverted
To turn aside from a course or direction.

dolly
A low mobile platform that rolls, used for transporting heavy loads.

dormer

embed

enamel
A paint that dries to a hard glossy finish.

epoxy

Fahrenheit
Of or relating to a temperature scale that registers the freezing point of water as 32° and the boiling point as 212° at one atmosphere of pressure.

fascia
A flat horizontal band or member between moldings, especially in a classical entablature.

faucet
A regulator for controlling the flow of a liquid from a reservoir.

fertilizer
Any of a large number of natural and synthetic materials, including manure and nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium compounds, spread on or worked into soil to increase its capacity to support plant growth.

fiberglass
A material consisting of extremely fine glass fibers, used in making various products, such as yarns, fabrics, insulators, and structural objects or parts

fillet
A thin flat molding used as separation between or ornamentation for larger moldings.

filter
A porous material through which a liquid or gas is passed in order to separate the fluid from suspended particulate matter.

flange
A projection used for strength or for attaching to another object.

flapper

furring
Strip used to give a level surface for attaching wallboard.

galvanized
To coat (iron or steel) with rust-resistant zinc.

gasket
Any of a wide variety of seals or packings used between matched machine parts or around pipe joints to prevent the escape of a gas or fluid.

To cause to sprout or grow.

granular
Having a grainy texture.

generators
An electrical power supply system using an internal combustion engine.
Also known as a "Back-up Power Generator".  Systems vary greatly in size and purpose.


glazed
To give a smooth lustrous surface to.

grill
A grating of metal, wood, or another material used as a screen, divider, barrier, or decorative element.

gouge
To make a groove in.

grounding
Fastening electrical equipment to earth.

grout
A thin mortar used to fill cracks and crevices in masonry.

gypsum
A common white or colorless mineral (hydrated calcium sulphate) used to make cements and plasters.

hacksaw
A saw consisting of a tough, fine-toothed blade stretched taut in a frame, used for cutting metal.

headroom
Vertical space available to allow easy passage under something.

heat pump
A device that warms or cools a building by transferring heat from a relatively low-temperature reservoir to one at a higher temperature.

heatproof
Unaffected by heat. Used especially of plastic, glass, or ceramic utensils that may be used directly over a flame or in an oven.

herbicide
A chemical substance used to destroy or inhibit the growth of plants, especially weeds.

horizontal
Parallel to or in the plane of the horizon; at right angles to a vertical line.

hydraulic
Of, involving, moved by, or operated by a fluid, especially water, under pressure. Able to set and harden under water, as Portland cement.

illumination
The action of supplying or brightening with light or the resulting state.

impeller
One that impels, as a rotating device used to force a fluid in a desired direction under pressure.

inconspicuous
Not readily noticeable.

infiltration
The gas, fluid, or dissolved matter that has entered a substance.

inject
To force or drive (a fluid) into something.

inspect
To examine carefully and critically, especially for flaws.

institutional
Characteristic or suggestive of an institution, especially in being uniform, dull, or unimaginative.

insulation
A material that reduces or prevents the transmission of heat or sound or electricity.

integrity
The quality or condition of being whole or undivided; completeness.

intensified
To make intense or more intense.

intermittent
Stopping and starting at intervals.

invasive
Tending to intrude, as upon privacy.

jamb
One of a pair of vertical posts or pieces that together form the sides of a door, window frame, or fireplace, for example.

jigsaw
Fine-toothed power saw with a narrow blade; used to cut curved outlines.

joists
Any of the wood, steel, or concrete beams set parallel from wall to wall or across or abutting girders to support a floor or ceiling.

lacquer
A glossy, resinous material, such as the exudation of the lacquer tree, used as a surface coating.

latex
An emulsion of rubber or plastic globules in water, used in adhesives and synthetic rubber products.

lath
A thin strip of wood or metal, usually nailed in rows to framing supports as a substructure for plaster, shingles, slates, or tiles.

leaching
To remove soluble or other constituents from by the action of a percolating liquid

ledger
A horizontal timber in a scaffold, attached to the uprights and supporting the putlogs.

lever
A projecting handle used to adjust or operate a mechanism.

Lexan
A trademark used for polycarbonate.

liberal
Not strict or literal; loose or approximate.

lime
Any of various mineral and industrial forms of calcium oxide differing chiefly in water content and percentage of constituents such as silica, alumina, and iron.

linoleum
A durable, washable material made in sheets by pressing a mixture of heated linseed oil, rosin, powdered cork, and pigments onto a burlap or canvas backing. Linoleum is used as a covering especially for floors.

locknut
A usually thin nut screwed down on another nut to prevent it from loosening.

lubricate
To make slippery or smooth.

luminaire
An electrical light and its components; an electrical lighting fixture.

manufacturer
A business engaged in manufacturing some product.

mast
A vertical pole.

mechanism
A machine or mechanical appliance.

mesh
An open fabric of string or rope or wire woven together at regular intervals.

mildew
A superficial coating or discoloration of organic materials, caused by fungi, especially under damp conditions.

miter
Joint that forms a corner; usually both sides are beveled at a 45-degree angle to form a 90-degree corner.

moat
Ditch dug as a fortification and usually filled with water.

moderate
Not violent or subject to extremes; mild or calm.

mold
Any of various fungi that often cause disintegration of organic matter.

molding
An embellishment in strip form, made of wood or other structural material, that is used to decorate or finish a surface, like the wall of a room or building or the surface of a door or piece of furniture.

mortar
Any of various bonding materials used in masonry, surfacing, and plastering, especially a plastic mixture of cement, sand, and water that hardens in place and is used to bind together bricks or stones.

mulch
A protective covering, usually of organic matter such as leaves, straw, or peat, placed around plants to prevent the evaporation of moisture, the freezing of roots, and the growth of weeds.

To locate or place in a particular relation to the points of the compass.

orifice
An opening through which something may pass.

oxalic acid
It is used in dyeing, calico printing, bleaching flax and straw, the preparation of formic acid, and in salts of lemon for removing ink stains, mold, etc. A dibasic acid.

pane
A framed section of a window or door that is usually filled with a sheet of glass or other transparent material.

panel
A flat, usually rectangular piece forming a raised, recessed, or framed part of the surface in which it is set.

peen
The part of a hammerhead opposite the flat striking surface (may have various shapes).

pendant
Hanging down; dangling; suspended.

penetration
The act of entering into or through something.

perimeter
The outer limits of an area; circumference.

perpendicular
Intersecting at or forming right angles.

persist
To continue in existence; last.

pigmented
Colored as the result of a deposit of pigment.

pilot
Serving or leading as guide.

pinhole
A tiny puncture made by or as if by a pin.

pivot
A short rod or shaft on which a related part rotates or swings

plank
A piece of lumber cut thicker than a board.

plaster
A mixture of lime or gypsum, sand, and water, sometimes with fiber added, that hardens to a smooth solid and is used for coating walls and ceilings.

plenum
A condition, space, or enclosure in which air or other gas is at a pressure greater than that of the outside atmosphere.

pliers
A variously shaped hand tool having a pair of pivoted jaws, used for holding, bending, or cutting.

plunger

To cause (liquid, for example) to pass through a porous substance or small holes; filter.

phenolic
Of, relating to, containing, or derived from phenol.

pitchfork
A large, long-handled fork with sharp, widely spaced prongs for lifting and pitching hay.

polyethylene
A lightweight thermoplastic; used especially in packaging and insulation.

porosity
The property of being porous; being able to absorb fluids.

prefabricated
Manufactured in standard sizes to be shipped and assembled elsewhere.

preformed
An object that has been subjected to preliminary, usually incomplete shaping or molding before undergoing complete or final processing.

primer
An undercoat of paint or size applied to prepare a surface, as for painting.

prismatic
Formed by refraction of light through a prism. Used of a spectrum of light.

An exploratory device designed to investigate and obtain information.

pry
A heavy iron lever with one end forged into a wedge; to move or force, especially in an effort to get something open.

pumice
A light, porous, glassy lava, used in solid form as an abrasive and in powdered form as a polish and an abrasive.

quarry
Extract (something such as stones) from or as if from a quarry.

R

rafter
One of the sloping beams that supports a pitched roof.

ratchet
A mechanism consisting of a pawl that engages the sloping teeth of a wheel or bar, permitting motion in one direction only.

recessed
Having a sunken area.

receptacle
A fitting connected to a power supply and equipped to receive a plug.

reciprocating
Moving alternately backward and forward.

recurrence
To happen, come up, or show up again or repeatedly.

reflector
A surface that reflects light, heat, or sound.

refrigerant
A substance, such as air, ammonia, water, or carbon dioxide, used to provide cooling either as the working substance of a refrigerator or by direct absorption of heat.

refrigeration cycle
Describes the changes that take place to a refrigerant in absorbing heat and subsequently radiating it as it is circulated around a refrigerator.

regressed
To go back; move backward.

regulate
To control or direct according to rule, principle, or law.

reinforce
To strengthen by adding extra support or material.

reservoir
A receptacle or chamber for storing a fluid.

residue
Matter remaining after completion of an abstractive chemical or physical process, like evaporation, combustion, distillation, or filtration.

resilient
Capable of returning to an original shape or position, as after having been compressed.

resource
Something that can be used for support or help.

respirator
A screenlike device worn over the mouth or nose or both to protect the respiratory tract.

restriction
Something that restricts; a regulation or limitation.

retailer
A merchant who sells goods at retail as opposed to a wholesaler who sells at wholesale to dealers or companies.

retaining
To keep or hold in a particular place, condition, or position.

rhizome
A horizontal, usually underground stem that often sends out roots and shoots from the point where a leaf is attached or has been attached.

rigid
Not flexible or pliant; stiff.

riser
The vertical part of a stair step.

rivet
A metal bolt or pin having a head on one end, inserted through aligned holes in the pieces to be joined and then hammered on the plain end so as to form a second head.

rototill
To cultivate or dig with a motorized rotary cultivator.

rupture
The process or instance of breaking open or bursting.

salvage
To save (discarded or damaged material) for further use.

sanitizing
To make sanitary, as by cleaning or disinfecting.

sashes
The frames in which the panes of a window or door are set.

scaffold
A temporary platform, either supported from below or suspended from above, on which workers sit or stand when performing tasks at heights above the ground.

scalding
Causing a burning sensation, as from contact with hot liquid; boiling.

scorch
To burn superficially so as to discolor or damage the texture of.

scored
To mark the surface of with usually parallel cuts.

screed
A strip of wood, plaster, or metal placed on a wall or pavement as a guide for the even application of plaster or concrete.

sealant
A substance, such as sealing wax, used to seal a surface to prevent passage of a liquid or gas.

sediment
Material that settles to the bottom of a liquid.

septic
Involves septic tanks and human excrement.

setback
Structure where a wall or building narrows abruptly.

setscrew
A screw used to regulate the tension of a spring.

shank
A stem, stalk, or similar part.

sheathing
A layer of boards or of other wood or fiber materials applied to the outer studs, joists, and rafters of a building to strengthen the structure and serve as a base for an exterior weatherproof cladding.

sheetmetal
Metal that has been rolled into a sheet having a thickness between foil and plate.

shellac
A purified lac in the form of thin yellow or orange flakes, often bleached white and widely used in varnishes, paints, inks, sealants.

skid
A plank, log, or timber, usually one of a pair, used as a support or as a track for sliding or rolling heavy objects.

shims

spackle
Powder (containing gypsum plaster and glue) that when mixed with water forms a plastic paste used to fill cracks and holes in plaster.

spade
A sturdy digging tool having a thick handle and a heavy, flat blade that can be pressed into the ground with the foot.

Any of various mechanical parts that revolve or serve as axes for larger revolving parts.

strainer

stringer
A horizontal timber used to support upright posts.

stripper
A chemical product for removing a surface covering, such as paint or varnish.

stubout
As in: slide a slip nut and beveled washer onto the arm, then insert the arm into the drain stubout and tighten the slip nut down

stud
A small knob, nail head, or rivet fixed in and slightly projecting from a surface.

subbase
The lowest molding of an architectural base or of a baseboard.

sustain
To support from below; keep from falling or sinking; prop.

swivel
To turn or rotate.

symmetrical
Having similarity in size, shape, and relative position of corresponding parts.

syringe
An instrument that consists of a hollow barrel fitted with a plunger and a hollow needle.

systemic
Of or relating to systems or a system.

T

tack
To fasten or attach with or as if with a tack.

tailpiece
A piece forming an end; an appendage.

tapered
To become gradually narrower or thinner toward one end.

technician
One whose occupation requires training in a specific technical process.

template
A pattern or gauge, such as a thin metal plate with a cut pattern, used as a guide in making something accurately, as in woodworking or the carving of architectural files.

thermocouple
A kind of thermometer consisting of two wires of different metals that are joined at both ends; one junction is at the temperature to be measured and the other is held at a fixed lower temperature; the current generated in the circuit is proportional.

thermostat
A device, as in a home heating system, a refrigerator, or an air conditioner, that automatically responds to temperature changes and activates switches controlling the equipment.

threshold
A piece of wood or stone placed beneath a door; a doorsill.

thrive
To grow vigorously; flourish.

tilling
Cultivation of the land in order to raise crops.

topsoil
The upper part of the soil.

tread
The upper horizontal part of a step in a staircase.

trench
Any long ditch cut in the ground.

trowel
A flat-bladed hand tool for leveling, spreading, or shaping substances such as cement or mortar. To spread, smooth, form, or scoop with a trowel.

tuckpointing
To point (grooved mortar joints) with a thin ridge of fine lime mortar or putty.

union
A coupling device for connecting parts, such as pipes or rods.

unit
An entire apparatus or the equipment that performs a specific function.

upgrade
To improve the quality of.

upkeep
Maintenance in proper operation, condition, and repair.

urethane
An ester of carbamic acid.

utility knife
